Myopia is also known as nearsightedness. Near objects are
seen clearly but distance objects are blurred. Typically myopia
begins to affect vision in childhood and stabilizes after
adolescence. Myopia is due to an eyeball which is too long or a
cornea which is too curved causing an image to form in front of the
retina. About one in four Americans is myopic, or nearsighted. This
is readily treated by refractive eye treatment such as PRK or LASIK.
